One 60-day journey around the Land Down Under is being halted days after the fatal incident of an older lady who was abandoned by the vessel on a distant coastal location.

The passenger had been trekking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the excursion for a pause. The vessel left without her and came back after some time after the ship staff became aware the woman was missing.

An extensive rescue mission discovered her person the subsequent day.

Officials are investigating the tragedy, in coordination with law enforcement and the official investigator.

Chief Executive of the shipping company stated that passengers and crew on the vessel were told that the rest of the cruise had been terminated due to the "sad loss and prior mechanical issues".

In a statement, he further stated that guests would be provided a total repayment, and said the company was working "to organize the return journeys of the passengers via specially arranged planes".

Authorities also released an updated communication, and said they had "provided a order to the Master" prohibiting any new passengers from getting on the liner.

The spokesperson said that they would visit the ship in Cairns upon its return.

Chronology of Incidents

The liner initially left the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was merely two days into the journey at the moment of the elderly woman's passing. The tropical location was the initial destination on the itinerary.

Guests on the vessel - who typically pay tens of thousands of dollars to participate in the cruise - were taken there for a shore visit with the possibility of trekking or snorkeling.

Relatives Statement

The offspring of the deceased woman said that her relatives was "surprised and saddened that the liner left Lizard Island after an planned tour without my mum".

Through her comments, she portrayed her mum as an "active elderly person" who was a participant of a walking club.

"Based on limited facts we have been informed, it appears that there was a failure of attention and basic judgment," she mentioned.

She added that she wished the examination would be able to identify what "the company should have done that might have preserved Mum's life".

"Based on information from the police that it was a exceptionally warm day, and she became unwell on the hill climb," she explained.

"They requested her to go back, unescorted. Then the boat left, seemingly without conducting a roll call.

"During some point in that chain of events, or not long after, mum passed away, by herself."

In a statement, the Chief Executive verified that the operator was "cooperating fully with investigators to assist their inquiry".

He mentioned that the company was "deeply sorry that this has transpired" and had offered its complete assistance to the family.

The ship accommodates up to 120 guests with forty-six staff, according to company details. It was purpose-built to enter distant regions of the nation's coast and is equipped with "small boats" - compact vessels used to ferry individuals on shore trips.

Occurrences such as this are rare, and cruise ships have systems to track which travelers are boarding or leaving, according to maritime specialists.

"Leaving covertly or [back] onboard really isn't an choice," an authority remarked.

Cruise lines consider these methods very seriously and have "sophisticated systems in place to stop such incidents from taking place," the expert added.

"This appears to be probably a surprising - and sad - isolated incident."
