The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
